Description

Charnley Forest Whetstone (Natural Stone)

A compact whetstone made from the legendary Charnley Forest slate, primarily designed for field use, quick touch-ups, use as a slurry stone, or for sharpening small-bladed tools. Its size and abrasive performance allow efficient edge restoration without additional equipment.

Charnley Forest is a rare and well-known natural stone from central England, traditionally quarried near Mount Sorrel, Leicestershire, close to Charnwood Forest. Unlike most Welsh slates, it originates from this specific region.

The stone has a medium hardness, does not absorb lubricant, and can be used with water or oil, including easy transitions between them. With water, it produces a light grey-white slurry that increases cutting efficiency.

Estimated grit equivalent: ~6000–8000 JIS (water) and ~8000–10000 JIS (oil).

Despite its fine finish, it offers high cutting ability and works well even on very hard steels.
