Description
A glass blank glued to an aluminum base is necessary to ensure a more secure attachment of glass blanks in a stone holder in manual sharpening machines. The fact is that the glass blank has rather slippery ends and can slip out of the holder during operation. For example, self-adhesive abrasives and polishing films can be attached to a structure in the form of blanks - glass and aluminum, connected with double-sided tape. It is inappropriate to simply glue them onto an aluminum blankThe aluminum billet is not rigid enough and will bend one way or another during the sharpening process. In addition, again the plane of the working surface of the abrasive will be recessed under the jaws of the holder, which leads to the risk of accidental damage to the cutting edge.

If you use a glass blank without aluminum, it will not be securely fixed in the holder. As a result, in a "sandwich" of two blanks - an aluminum blank ensures secure fastening, and a glass blank ensures the rigidity of the structure, ideal geometry and hardness of the working surface. All together it has a thickness of up to 7mm, which is quite comfortable for work. In addition to self-adhesive films, various abrasive pastes (diamond or CBN) can be applied to such a structure (directly on the surface of the glass blank) and sharpened on free grain. This method is quite common when sharpening clicks from extra hard high-carbon and powder steels. High-quality double-sided tape manufactured by 3M is used, which guarantees reliable attachment to the blank of metal and glass surfaces. It is not recommended to glue any stones on the tape, since in this case sufficient reliability of the connection will not be ensured. If necessary, separate the surfaces glued with double-sided tape, they need to be slightly heated.
